The movie charts for 27 January 2009 are now available.
I expect Slumdog Millionaire will continue to climb the charts in its runup to the Academy Awards.

January 13 charts available
I've updated the movie charts for this past weekend. It's a slight dip from the first weekend of the year, but Clint Eastwood got an unexpected #1 spot, grossing almost $30M with Gran Torino.

2008 UK Box Office
The wonderful UK Film Council website has box office stats for the 2008 (the final weekend seems to be missing). I've made a chart of the UK's 2008 box office here.

There are a couple differences from the US movie charts. Only 15 movies are shown instead of 25. The vertical scale has been increased by a factor of four to make the chart easier to read. Because of that, directly comparing the US chart to the UK chart is misleading; the UK box office is a lot smaller than it appears.
I was surprised by the popularity and longevity of Mama Mia! in the UK. It looks like it beat out The Dark Knight for the year.
